EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Kendall Schmidt Talks to Us About Heffron Drive
Kendall Schmidt. Of course you remember him as one part of the Nickelodeon boy band Big Time Rush. But now the boys are starting to move on and do their own thing, but that doesn’t mean the music is stopping anytime soon.
Kendall’s original project, Heffron Drive, is back! And together with BTR guitarist Dustin Belt,
they’re heading out on tour starting in November. We got to talk with
Kendall about his upcoming tour and future plans in music. See what he
had to say! Fanlala: So what’s next? We read that you’re working
on solo music, but your tour says Heffron Drive is going to be a thing.
We want to hear straight from the source.
Kendall Schmidt: The solo music and Heffron Drive
are really the same thing. There’s a lot of HD music in the works, and
not every song will be done by Dustin and I, both. There are a lot of
songs that I made, and there’s music that I’m working on now. I’ve
always been writing, I haven’t stopped for the last three years. It’s
like an exercise and a hobby for me.
F: What is it about Ariana and the Rose that you think will make her a great opening act?
KS: I want this to be a fun show. It’ll be taking
place at a lot of smaller places in a more intimate setting. I saw a
couple of videos of hers, and she’s very talented. I wanted to give
someone a chance to open for me, and she just seemed like the perfect
fit. I haven’t met her yet, but I have a feeling it’ll be really cool to
share music with her and that she’ll be fun to hang with!
F: What’s the transition from Big Time Rush to Heffron Drive like?
KS: I don’t have to worry about lyrics as much. Now
there’s not going to be a whole bunch of cuss words in my music or
anything, but I’m more free to think about what I’ve been writing. The
change, otherwise, isn’t too drastic. It’s not a world away. I’ll always
love pop, and alt music, and electro music. I get to combine all of my
favorite things in my songs. I get to write what I love the most. The
songs will be very singer-songwriter. They’ll sound very alt, pop, and
electro.
F: What will the HD tour be like compared to a Big Time Rush concert?
KS: It’s going to be a lot smaller. I won’t be
dancing, just because it’s not that kind of music. It’s funny, at the
beginning of my tour career, I didn’t love dancing, but at the end, I
really enjoyed myself. On stage I feel pretty awesome.
The HD tour will be a lot smaller, more fun and intimate. I will be
singing everything. Before it was me and three other guys, but now it’ll
be interesting with me carrying all of the vocal weight. I’ll be doing a
lot of shows in such a short of period of time now
F: If you could title any BTR episode that wasn’t “Big Time _________” what would it be, and what would the plot have been?
KS: Oh wow. Uhh… “Big Time Management” is where we
could get together and create a management group and just submit what
we’re best at, and then we’d figure out a way to profit off of that. BTR
was always so goofy, so I think that would be a way to really play
towards our strengths!
Kendall Schmidt has come a long way, and to think that there’s still a
long road ahead. We are so excited to see Heffron Drive take the stage
starting next month with openers Ariana and the Rose and Eric Dash. In the meantime, we’ll be listening to our fave BTR tunes on Fanlala Radio. Download it today and let us know what you think!
Thanks for chatting with us, Kendall!

Shattered fans of US boy band Big Time Rush can take heart, the boys will be around for a little longer.
Although it appears their popular Nickelodeon TV show is set to
finish up soon, the band are not breaking up, lead singer Kendall
Schmidt told AAP.
In Sydney for kids music festival SlimeFest, Schmidt said the
band is simply undergoing a transformation because, "people have to
spread their wings a little bit".
The pop group received plenty of reaction from upset fans after a recent interview in which they hinted at their future careers.
"There's definitely Big Time Rush in the future, it's just a matter of deciding what we want to do," Schmidt told AAP.
Carlos, Kendall, James and Logan rose to fame in 2009 on the hit
kid's show, about high school hockey players who form a pop band.
Now, four years later, they're looking at what's next on the horizon.
"The episodic 23-minute Big Time Rush episodes are done, but I
think ... it's really about scheduling for the boys," Schmidt said.
"There's four individual artists in this band and it's been four
or five years (after the show started), everybody wants to exercise
creativity in other places, as any other artist would want to."
Schmidt, the lead singer of the band, has plenty of other
interests outside of Big Time Rush to keep him busy, including his own
band, Heffron Drive.
The 23-year-old singer and actor has breaking into electronic dance music (EDM) on his radar.
"I'm a huge EDM fan and that's a huge market right now.
"I would love to do a song where older kids are like `hmm, he's got a pretty cool voice and he likes the same music we do'."
For now, Schmidt is spending time writing tunes for Heffron Drive
and other acts, most recently New Zealand boy band Titanium's latest
tune, Unarmed.
The song is "older" in lyrical content, something that's much
easier to do outside of Nickelodeon standards and practices, Schmidt
says.
While the freedom to write songs for older audiences is luring, Schmidt says he will always keep to his roots in some way.
"It's not like I'm going to do a crazy lyrical song that people
are going to be like `that's awfully rude of him to do, after Big Time
Rush'.
"It's not going to be that crazy, but will be a bit more aged up."
He won't be taking any tips from former child star Miley Cyrus when it comes to making the transformation from kid's TV.
"I definitely wouldn't want to be known for anything other than being a good role model.
"I guess (Miley) just wanted to separate herself, but I think
it's also possible to make music that people like and can relate to.
"I just hope that you can get there by being cool and people like to talk to you and hear your music. That will be nice."
Big Time Rush ig Time Rush is a Nickelodeon
TV show about a group of teenage guys who unexpectedly get a chance to
pursue stardom together in the music industry. Big Time Rush (also known
as BTR) is band in real life and in the show. Big Time Rush is
an American boy band formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. The band
consists of members Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena Jr., and Logan Henderson. The band released its debut album, BTR, in October 2010 and a second studio album, Elevate, was released on November 21st, 2011.
Big Time Rush signed a record deal in 2009 simultaneously with the
television series, Big Time Rush. Their debut single, "Big Time Rush",
was released on November 29, 2009. It debuted during a one-hour special preview
of the series and it is currently the show's opening theme. The series
also saw the releases of other promotional singles including "City Is Ours" and "Any Kind of Guy". Big Time Rush also covered a Play song titled "Famous". The song was released on iTunes on June 29, 2010. Another song, "Halfway There",
was released to iTunes on April 27, 2010 after its premiere on the
series. The single has become their first to chart on the Billboard Hot
100, peaking at number 93 due to strong digital sales. On September 21,
2010, Big Time Rush released a promotional single, "Til' I Forget About
You", to promote the release of their debut album. The album, titled
B.T.R., was released on October 11, 2010. It debuted at number 3 on the
Billboard 200, selling 67,000 copies in its first week of release. The
album also peaked at number 4 on the "Top Internet Albums" and number
one on "Top Soundtracks". Its track "Big Night" debuted on the Billboard
Hot 100 at number 79, making it their highest peaking single. The album
was later certified Gold for shipments of 500,000 copies in the U.S.
and has currently sold over 900,000 copies worldwide. In November 2010,
it was announced that a Christmas special of Big Time Rush would debut
later that month, and that a Christmas EP would be released to coincide
with the episode. The EP, titled Holiday Bundle was released on November
30, 2010. They covered All I Want For Christmas Is You, originally
performed by Mariah Carey, with fellow Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove.
On February 15 2011, "Boyfriend" was released as the band's first
official single to mainstream US radio. "Boyfriend" peaked at number
seventy-two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their most successful
song to date. It peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart in
March 2011. A remix of "Boyfriend" which featured New Boyz was leaked
onto the internet. Big Time Rush was Nominated For MTV's Breakthrough
Band award Honor in 2011 As Well.
2011-2012: Elevate & 2012 Touring
On July 22, 2011, the band released a promotional single, "If I Ruled
The World" featuring Iyaz, off their second album, Elevate released on
November 21, 2011. The first single, "Music Sounds Better With U,"
written by the band and Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic, was released on
November 1, 2011. Elevate debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200, for
selling over 70,000 copies in its first week. According to Forbes.com,
Big Time Rush has amassed a net worth of about $8 million dollars in
2011 making them one of the youngest top earners of that year. Shortly
before the release of the Elevate, the band announced a national tour.
The Better With U Tour starting in February 2012, which counts
with sixteen dates. Several dates sold out within minutes of the
announcement. British-Irish boyband One Direction will be touring with
Big Time Rush for 10 out of sixteen dates.
Big Time Rush has announced a summer national tour starting July 5
at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus OH and ending September 18 at the
Rose Garden Arena in Portland OR. Cody Simpson and Rachel Crow will be
opening up for Big Time Rush. The dates for California sold out within
minutes.
Big Time Rush is currently filming the third season of "Big Time
Rush". The group is currently writing new songs for the 3rd season of
their show, in addition for their 3rd album, which is expected to be
released in late 2012 or early 2013.
2012-present: Film debut and third studio album
The band announced they would be starring in their full-length 2012 film, Big Time Movie. The movie features them travelling to London, England. In Big Time Movie,
the four members of the band Big Time Rush head to London for their
first big world tour but instead get mixed up in a mission to save the
world. The film was released on 10 March 2012 in the US, while a Germany
release was on 22 September 2012.[1] Due to the promotion, the group recorded cover of The Beatles songs and released an EP, Big Time Movie Soundtrack EP.[2]
However, the film received mixed to positive reviews from most
contemporary film critics, many comparing them to The Monkees but
praising their fun, carefree image.[3][4] However, the film was a commercial success, having over 13 million views in a week.[5]
On March 31, 2012, Big Time Rush released a music video for the
song Time Of Our Life with other Nickelodeon stars including themselves,
Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, How To Rock Cast,
and more. In March 2012 Big Time Rush co-hosted MTV's 10 on top.
The group is currently writing and recording new songs for their third album. Their single, "Windows Down",
was released on June 25, 2012. With its success, the song peaked at 37
on the US Pop Songs and 15 on the US Heatseekers Songs.[6] The song then debuted at 97 on the Billboard Hot 100.[7] It was included on a re-release of the group's second album, Elevate.
It has also sold over 120,000 digital units as of August 4th, 2012. it
has been certified silver in the united states by the RIAA for denoting
over 100,000 sold downloads.
The music video was filmed in Maui, Hawaii and was released on
June 22, three days before the single's iTunes release. Within 24 hours,
the music video shot to #2 on the iTunes music video charts, second to
Katy Perry's Wide Awake. It has since dropped to #3, third to Call Me Maybe, which it overtook earlier that week.
On August 6, 2012 Nickelodeon renewed the Big Time Rush series for a 13-episode fourth season, with production starting at the start of 2013.
Artistry
Musical style and themes
Because the group are associated with the TV series and children network Nickelodeon, they have been presented as a "child-friendly" group, but have musical differences. While reviewing their first studio album, BTR, Jessica Dawson from Common Sense,
she stated "Big Time Rush is a standout, not only because of their
boyish charm and good looks, but because their music is a cool blend of
synth-pop, hip-hop, and boy-band harmonies."[8] The music found on BTR
is mainly pop and R&B. The music found on the album is
child-appropriate, as it serves as not only their debut album, but the
soundtrack to their self-titled series.
Their second studio album, Elevate, presented a more dance-oriented song, along with general pop music and R&B.
"I think the music could stand alone, but I don’t know if it would be as
powerful. The show has definitely been our main audience. We have four
million kids watching. So when you put a song out, four million kids
hear it. When you put a song on the radio, you’re not going to have four
million people listening. It’s a blessing and a curse being on
Nickelodeon — it’s gotten us where we are now, though some people are
standoffish to us because of that. But we have to be grateful that
Nickelodeon gave us this opportunity. Abandoning the show would not be
the best idea."[9]
He was then asked about the ending of the series, where he replied "This
probably is going to be our last season. We have done almost 100
episodes, which is great. But yeah, the goal is for the music to carry
on — and for us to do other ventures."[9] They were also asked about this with JustJaredDJ
and they said "[BTR] We’re going to be a band as long as our record
label allows us to [...] We’re dedicated to BTR until the very end and
we don’t even know when that is." Amanda Ash from Edmondson Journal
said "While teens weave and wobble through adolescence, plastering
posters of boys with side-swept hair on our walls, it seems as though
boy bands like Big Time Rush too must take life as it comes. Sure, it
might mean functioning as a hinge on a musical machine, cranking out
singles in exchange for dollar signs, but artists learn and grow, too.
Big Time Rush is just another mandatory rung the quartet must climb."[10]
With their success, the group have been compared to recent boy
bands such as One Direction and The Wanted. However, in most reviewers,
Big Time Rush have been divided with positivety and negativity from
onlookers. However, recent boy bands including One Direction and The
Wanted have also not received rave outcomes.[11] Michael O'Connell from The Hollywood Reporter
said "One Direction is but one group in this resilient and timeless
fad. They follow the recent success of fellow Brits The Wanted and
Nickelodeon's cross-market creation Big Time Rush.
One [One Direction] is fluke. Two [The Wanted] is a coincidence. And
three [Big Time Rush] is a trend that you want to father your unborn
children.'[12] In August 2012, the group were voted the Best Boy Band in the World, with over 800,000 votes casted on them.[13][14]
Melinda Newman from Washington Post stated "In the grand
tradition of boy bands, these acts share certain traits with their
similarly manufactured pop ancestors: Members of the Wanted and Big Time
Rush auditioned for their parts at a casting call. The members of One
Direction were put together by Simon Cowell after trying out
individually for the British edition of “The X Factor.”"[11]
However, she positively compared them to The Monkees by saying "Big
Time Rush is similar to the Monkees with its own TV series as a
launchpad, and the group appeals to kids and tweens."[11]
To date, Big Time Rush have sold over 4 million records
worldwide. they are also one of the most popular boy band's in the 21st
century.
Plot of the Show
The story revolves around four ordinary guys who love hockey: Kendall Knight (Kendall Schmidt), James Diamond (James Maslow), Logan Mitchell (Logan Henderson), and Carlos Garcia (Carlos Pena Jr.). James dreams of becoming a star and jumps at the chance to audition when famous music manager Gustavo Rocque
is in town. But when all four guys end up auditioning, Gustavo dislikes
James' singing and instead wants to sign Kendall. Kendall agrees as
long as his friends can join him, the four of them making up a boy band.
They move to California with Kendall's mom and little sister, where
they attend Palm Woods School, a special high school just for actors,
singers, and other performers. The boys routinely conflict with the
overbearing, hard-driving Gustavo and his well-meaning assistant Kelly, while trying to impress Gustavo's boss, Griffin, so that they don't lose their chance at success.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Knight helps keep the boys in line and, even more so, her conniving, mischievous daughter Katie. The four teens often help out Tyler, a young boy whose mother is obsessed with his acting career, and sometimes hang out with Guitar Dude and actress-wannabe Camille. They also repeatedly (and often unsuccessfully) attempt to get dates with various female classmates, including the Jennifers, and Jo who was Kendall's girlfriend untill she moved to New Zealand for 3 years. But then she came back
When new episodes premiere, they will air on Thursday nights at 8:00/7:00c on Nickelodeon.
Kendall Schmidt has earned a huge fan base thanks to his starring role on Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush,
and as the show rolls on in its fourth season, he's seizing the
opportunity to re-launch his own music project. BFTV recently checked in
with Kendall to find out if this really is BTR's final run and get the 411 on Heffron Drive.
Kendall's co-star Tanya Chisholm told us earlier this month that season four is "technically" the last for Big Time Rush,
but he said that he hasn't gotten that memo. "I really have no idea.
I'm pretty sure being part of the band somebody would have told me, and
nobody has done that yet," he explained. "I love doing the show, so
we'll see. I think all of us are okay with taking the time to do
something on our own, but also we love being Big Time Rush."
He and his colleagues don't just play a band on TV - they actually are a band, and fans will be thrilled to know that there's more Big Time Rush music headed your way. Their new album is called 24/Seven, and can be pre-ordered on Amazon
before it hits shelves on June 11. "We're really excited about that.
We've been working on it since the end of our last tour," Kendall said.
"I think there's 10 songs on the [regular] CD, 15 on the deluxe album.
All the songs are in an episode [of the show], and then the deluxe stuff
is just stuff that we had to put on there. James [Maslow] did
this song called 'Amazing,' which is really great. Logan [Henderson] and
I did a song called 'Untouchable.'"
In addition to his commitment to Big Time Rush in all its forms,
Kendall has teamed with Dustin Belt to resurrect a music project they
began before the show called Heffron Drive. When he spoke to BFTV, he'd
just returned from a European tour for the new-old gig, and he's excited
to bring it back to the forefront.
"Basically it's a new effort at something I did a long time ago. We
started making music and we put a name to it, then I booked Big Time
Rush, so obviously I kind of had to put on hold," he explained. "But
[Dustin]'s always been there. He's been playing guitar for the actual
Big Time Rush band since the beginning. So we kind of always had the
idea of keeping it going. It's reinvigorated I guess you could say. I'm
going to keep doing as much as I can while being in Big Time Rush."
If you're a BTR fan that hasn't yet listened to Heffron
Drive, there are a few things he'd like you to know before you get
started. "The songs that they're listening to, I did them on my computer
in my room when I was 17," he said, referring to the few tracks that
are available at places like ReverbNation.
"They're literally like mixed, mastered and done by me. I'd like to
redo those songs and eventually put those songs out with modern tracks
and everything like that"
"It's a little more grown-up. It's a little more upper teenager
lyrical content. The Postal Service is a big inspiration," he continued,
describing the Heffron Drive sound. "But it's catchy stuff. My brothers
love it just as much as some of the fans love it."
Being on a hit TV show, playing in the band that goes with it, and
launching his own side project - what is it like for Kendall to juggle
all these ambitions? "At this point it seems sort of normal to be on a
pretty hectic schedule," he explained with a laugh. "You can't ever
really be that upset. I'm running around promoting music that I've made,
and I'm running around promoting a TV show I was lucky enough to be a
part of. There's people in the world who want to see us play live and
want to meet us in person, and it's our job as entertainers to do that."
He also takes a moment to thank the Big Time Rush audience,
having found out before this interview that the band has snagged a Teen
Choice Award nomination. "I just found out about that. We're nominated
for Choice Music Group," he said, adding without missing a beat, "We
have the best fans in the world." Big Time Rush airs Thursdays on Nickelodeon (check your local listings for specific time and channel). 24/Seven is available for pre-order on Amazon.com. You can also keep up with Kendall on Twitter (@HeffronDrive).
And I think the second one that everyone’s feeling is ‘Song for You,’
and that’s just an awesome song. But it’s weird, the two songs that are
coming out first are ones that we didn’t do. We wrote 13 out of 15
songs, and those two songs are the ones that came out first, which is
fine, but I almost like to think we’re saving the best for last.
The very last episode has two songs in it, and they were both ones
that I wrote, so I’m super stoked about that. The president of Nick
actually came up to me and she said, ‘What’s that Ryan Tedder song you
guys have on your CD?’ I asked, ‘Which one?’ and she said, ‘We Are.’ I
said, ‘I wrote that!’ She was like, ‘You wrote that?! It sounded like a
Ryan Tedder track!’ That’s a pretty big compliment!
Yeah, it’s a sick compliment. He did one of our songs on the second
album. I remember working with him, and he was a pure genius. Having
somebody say that my song sounded anything even remotely like something
he would write was a huge compliment.
I think another great song is ‘Confetti Falling.’
It’s old, we’ve wanted to use it forever and we’ve never gotten the
chance to do it. It was in consideration on the second album, but we did
16 songs for this one. It’s hard. Songs that I adore didn’t make the
album, but I also know that since I did them, I can always use them for
Heffron Drive. Oh, you can?
Yeah. I think it’s a certain length of time after. They have to give me
an option to use it for six months or something like that. It’s
contractual stuff. But after that it’s free and clear again and I can
use that song. So if they don’t want it, it’s like, ‘Fine, don’t take
it. I’ll keep it!’ [Laughs] Have you ever thought about selling your songs to other artists?
Yeah, I’d love to sell songs. I’ve been looking to get a publishing deal
soon. That’s a big dream of mine as well. I’ve actually written a song
for this girl named Ellen Levann. She’s an Australian artist and I think
it’s gonna be either her second or third single, which I’m pretty
stoked about. She does all dance music and I was in sort of in a rasta
mood that day, and it just so happened that they were playing that kind
of music in the studio that day.
I remember I was late for the session and I came in and was like, ‘I
don’t have any ideas.’ Then I remember thinking about that song ‘Chain
of Fools.’ I was thinking about this girl and she seemed like a beach-y
girl, and I got this image of a girl hanging on a guy, like staring up
longingly at him. I got to the session and I was like, ‘I had this idea.
A girl hanging on a guy and at the end you say, ‘All I wanna do is be
hanging on you like a chain, chain, chain.” And they were like, ‘Yeah!’
The song kind of just flowed out. So, have you guys started preparing for the Big Time Rush summer tour yet?
NO! *laughs*Laughs] No, no, no, we actually had a meeting
yesterday morning, talking about set lists and stuff. I saw pictures of
the set, and it looks really cool. We’re not bringing a band this time,
we’re gonna have be a DJ. Ultimately because there’s four of us on
stage, we take up so much of the presence anyways, that the guys [in the
band] never really had a chance to shine.
But [our guitarist] Dustin is still coming, he’s going to play
acoustic. We’re doing like a middle acoustic section, and he’s gonna
come out and play with me. So, I’m supposed to be putting a set list
together, I was going to do it on the flight but I fell asleep. Oh, you guys get to put it together. That’s fun!
Yeah, like I’ll send my idea, and then Carlos will be like, ‘I like
that, but let’s do this.’ And then Logan will be like, ‘I don’t like it
all, let’s do this.’ And James will be like, ‘Uhhh, sounds good.’
But all I know is that we have to switch it up from the last tour. I
think we’re gonna try and do six new songs. You know, when you go to
concerts and they’re like, ‘We’re gonna play a new one for ya!’ Well,
we’re gonna do six. And I think … everyone should know [the new songs]
by that point. And hopefully have bought the album! We’re sure you will have no problems there. You guys shot way up on iTunes when ’24/Seven’ first went on pre-sale.
Yeah, it’s cool that the pre-order is up like that. When it first came
out, it went to No. 5 on the Pop Charts pre-order. I only consider us in
the Pop Chart realm. I don’t look at the overall chart, because it’s
like, I’m not competing against Toby Keith. You know what I mean? We’re
only gonna be the best pop band that we can be. We saw a picture of you and the other Big Time Rush guys on
Instagram, and you’re all in a dumpster wearing ball suits. What was
that about?
That’s just typical Big Time Rush. Don’t worry about that. Dumpsters
with skintight ball suits… I find myself questioning my career
sometimes. [Laughs]
['Big Time Rush' writer] Scott is a kooky guy, you know? I can only
imagine what it’s like to write a script from nothing, so the ideas he
comes up with tend to be wacky, especially since he’s a bit of a human
cartoon himself.
[That episode] we were doing a video game in the world of Big Time
Rush. The boss thinks it’s gonna make a lot of money, but we had to wear
these ridiculous ball suits, which is completely unrealistic to the way
they actually do motion capture. Then we get locked out of the stage
and it’s really cold and we’re running around the city, and everyone
thinks that we’re aliens. The whole city clears out and they’re looking
for these four aliens, but it’s really just us. So, we hide in a
dumpster. We jumped in multiple times. There’s also been some rumors about another Big Time Rush movie coming out.
I would love that. I think it would be great, but Scott would still have
to write it. By the time we’re done with tour, I know that there are
gonna be plans. They haven’t destroyed the sets. The sets are in
storage, so as far as I’m concerned, we’re definitely gonna come back
and do something. It might not be thirteen episodes again, but it might
be like a mini series. We might do four hour-long shows, or one
hour-long movie with three regular episodes to lead up to it.
But whatever it is, I’m in. I think we’re going to South America
after [the summer tour]. We haven’t announced it, so don’t put that in
there. [Laughs] Honestly though, put it in there, ’cause it
puts the pressure on them! But that would be in August. We’d go to South
America and would be back in the States in late September.
The tour’s gonna be really great, though. Victoria’s coming out with
us. I haven’t seen what she’s doing yet, what her set is like.
Apparently, she’s putting her own little place on stage with LED
screens. It’ll be like a show within a show. She’s got a band — it’s
kind of funny that she has a band and we don’t. We were kind of weird
about it, but honestly there’s four dudes on stage. You don’t need any
more dude on stage. That’s enough guy. Do you think you’ll perform any songs with Victoria on tour?
We did ‘[I Knew You Were] Trouble’ when we did the tour announcement. ‘Song for You,’ Amy [Heidemann of Karmin]
raps in it. It’s a really fun rap. I’ve learned it, so if I’ve learned
it, then [Victoria] can learn it. And if not that, then maybe when we do
our acoustic thing on ‘Trouble’ with her. I have a great time playing
that song, it’s awesome. It’s got so much energy in it, especially when
it builds into the chorus. I had fun at the House of Blues. I’d be down
to do it again.
Kendall Schmidt is a busy guy. When he isn’t out promoting his
awesome two-man band Heffron Drive, he spends a lot of his time
performing with a little group called Big Time Rush.
With a new album entitled ’24/Seven’ on the horizon for BTR, Schmidt
stopped into the PopCrush headquarters to discuss the quartet’s latest
LP (due out June 11), some of the new tracks, the band’s upcoming summer
tour with Victoria Justice,
dumpster diving on TV, and much, much more… including what’s in store
for Big Time Rush’s future. Check out our exclusive chat with Schmidt
below. So, ‘Like Nobody’s Around’ is your first official single from ’24/Seven.’
Yeah, well it’s the first official single because it’s in the first
episode. I don’t think the band would’ve picked it as the first single –
it’s not just our decision though, there are all kinds of
powers-that-be, including us, who have to make these choices.
But it’s a great song, and the message is unbelievable. It’s pretty
much, be yourself and don’t judge people. I think a lot of music today
is just about drinking and having a good time, which is great, it’s
fine! But, kids need to have positive messages. It’s supposed to send
the message that you can have fun being you and being creative. I have
tattoos, why? Because I wanted to get tattoos and I’m myself. I’d never
think I’d have a skull, but I do … Well, it’s a sugar skull, so it’s not
that hardcore. [Laughs]
The same day Kendall Schmidt
visited CBSNews.com in New York City, he was stopped not once -- but
twice -- by two girls who wanted him to sign a piece of paper with a
song title and lyric. This wasn't just any regular piece of paper,
though; both ladies planned to bring Schmidt's handwritten song title to
a tattoo artist so they could get inked with a permanent tattoo.
"They
get that tattoed on their body forever!" said singer/guitarist Schmidt.
"I don't think they realize the significance of that."
That's the kind of die-hard enthusiasm that surrounds Big Time Rush
-- both the boy band and the Nickelodeon series of the same name. The
show is currently in its fourth season, and Schmidt, along with Logan
Henderson, James Maslow and Carlos Pena, Jr. of Big Time Rush, will
release their third studio album, "24/Seven," on Tuesday. Fans have been
clamoring for new material ever since the release of Big Time Rush's
last album, 2011's "Elevate."
Schmidt, 22, co-wrote at least six
songs on the new set. "You walk in with sort of an idea and then
something just comes out of nowhere, and then you're like, 'That sounds
great.' And it's really not up to you to decide. It really comes down to
playing it and someone likes it," said Schmidt, who says he also hopes
to one day write and produce for other artists. "Writing a song --
creating something from nothing -- is really great," he said.
Schmidt is already tackling writing with his side project, Heffron Drive,
a band he started even before he joined Big Time Rush. He recently
toured with Heffron Drive, playing original songs and covers -- and
hopes to do more with it soon. Schmidt actually had been pursuing a
career with Heffron Drive before he landed the role with Big Time Rush,
an opportunity that almost never happened.
"I went on an
audition. Then I got a call-back," Schmidt said. "But then they hired
the guy I think they shot the pilot with. Then I didn't hear anything
for a long time. As far as I was concerned I forgot about it." He later
ran into Scott Fellows, the creator of the show, who asked Schmidt to
audition again. "I got another call-back and didn't hear anything for
another three months...then I got called into 'boy band boot camp.' We
would spend hours with the choreographer." Schmidt also had to sing as
part of a competition with the other guys auditioning for the part. The
rest is history, and he's been one quarter of Big Time Rush since 2009.
Big
Time Rush will be on tour throughout the summer. And then? "I don't
know how you can possibly dismantle a band like Big Time Rush. It's such
a huge entity...We don't fight," Schmidt said. "We argue and bicker
over little things. We're all so different that we never compete with
each other...It's always going to be a huge part of my life -- and our
lives. As long as the fans want content, and they want us to keep
filming, I think they will keep us filming."

Biography: Kendall
Schmidt stars in the new Nickelodeon live-action comedy series Big Time
Rush as Kendall, the lead singer of the new “princes of pop” music
group.
Born
in Wichita, Kansas, Schmidt was raised in nearby Andover and grew up
the youngest of three brothers who all caught the acting bug. After
watching his two brothers, Kenneth and Kevin, travel back and forth to
Los Angeles, Schmidt decided he also wanted to be an actor. While it
began as “something fun to do,” Schmidt quickly became passionate about
pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. “My first acting memory
is starring in a Chex cereal commercial with my brothers. Even though
we went to the audition separately, we were cast to play brothers,” he
recalls.
When
he was 10 years-old, his family finally made the move from Kansas to
California. Schmidt soon landed recurring roles on General Hospital,
Titus, Raising Dad, Gilmore Girls and CSI: Miami. He also guest starred
on series including ER, Mad TV, Frasier and Phil of the Future and most
recently, Without a Trace and Ghost Whisperer. On the big screen, he
appeared in Minority Report, AI and Lions Gate’s According to Spencer.
In
addition to acting, Schmidt’s other love is making music. Within the
last three years, he has learned to play guitar and has honed his vocal
skills from singing in the car with his mom to recording in the studio.
Inspired by “Incubus,” his all-time favorite band, and “Taking Back
Sunday,” Schmidt also writes his own music. Another source of
inspiration is his family. “My whole family has given me the drive to
succeed,” he said. “My brothers mean the world to me. They keep me
grounded and offer a different perspective when I need advice.”
Schmidt
was drawn to his role in Big Time Rush by the music. “Acting comes
naturally to me but I think I am best at music,” said Schmidt. “If I
could combine both loves, then I am successful.” Schmidt identifies with
his character, who suddenly finds himself thrust into the limelight,
trying to get a handle on being a part of a music group. His character
Kendall’s attitude is to enjoy the ride –and Schmidt plans on following
the same advice.
When
he is not focusing on his music and acting, Schmidt likes hanging out
with his friends or being outdoors, whether it’s to rock climb, surf or
skateboard. Schmidt lives in Los Angeles with his two dogs, cat, bird,
tortoise and python.
